Often, when you’re worried and anxious, your mind is flitting between a number of negative, unhelpful and distressing thoughts. Mindfulness encourages you to focus on the present and engage your mind with more helpful thoughts.
For Joe and Jess, this meant focusing their minds on problem solving, on being ‘solution-focused.’ What this meant was that rather than let their minds be filled with anxious thoughts, they focused on how they could positively manage their situations.
Another way to use mindful focus and engagement is as a distraction technique. For example, if you were anxious about an interview the next day and you had done all you could to prepare for it, you might focus and engage your mind with something else the evening before: a good film or a meal out with friends.
